Data Usage Explanation

On the pages that personal data is collected (i.e. sign up page, settings page and edit profile page), site managers have the option of adding a block to explain what data will be collected on this page and why they are needed.

This is done via the Data Usage Explanation Block (/admin/config/system/inform-consent)

Here, you will see a list of pages, for which you can edit & enable an Explanation Block. For example, on the Account Settings page (/user/*/edit) you can hit the Edit Button:

You will then see the option to Enable on this page and the options for including your explanation itself. The Title and Summary will be displayed in the block directly, and users can see the full description by clicking "Read More", which will open in a modal window

💡 Expand the use of this to give your users "live" guidance!

This feature has been developed to give users information about Data Usage BUT you can also use it to give them information about anything.

For example, you can add an Explanation Block to the Add Topic (/node/add/topic) Page, to help first-time users understand how to use the Create Topic Form:

Or the edit profile (/user/*/profile) page:

This can be a great way of encouraging and supporting users to share content, based on best practices.

Top Tip! Switch the text format to Full HTML and you have many more options for what you can include, particularly in the "Description" (AKA "Read More")
